Devorgilla – what’s that?
800 years ago a love story was wrought in stone with the creation of Sweetheart Abbey, just five miles from Dumfries. The story of Lady Devorgilla, so devoted to her late husband that she carried his heart next to hers in a silver casket, inspired the creation of the word ‘sweetheart’. Lady Devorgilla left quite a mark upon Dumfries, and indeed one of the town’s most iconic features, an ancient footbridge, carries her name. Her story touched our hearts and so we similarly adopted her name for our gallery.
